In the run up to this years’ summer Reading Quest, Suffolk Community Libraries has launched new short story competition for 5-15 year olds.

Using the six curious creature illustrations as inspiration, children are invited to write a short 500-word story and submit it to their local library to be in with a chance of winning some bookish prizes!

As 2026 marks the National Year of Reading, Suffolk’s library service is finding new ways to encourage people of all ages to engage with the written word.

Alongside Suffolk Community Libraries’ annual Reading Quest, this new competition is another way for children and young people to familiarise themselves with local artist Matt Robertson’s marvellous illustrations and think creatively to win prizes.

Ideas for Entrants

Take some time to consider each of the curious creatures – what could their names be? Are they friendly or fiendish? Have they been making mischief or trying to solve it? Will you write about one curious creature or all of them?

Here are some other starter ideas to get you thinking (or why not invent your own!):

  • The Curious Creatures sneak into a library after closing time and discover a secret door.
  • They go on a sunny seaside mission and find something unexpected in the sand.
  • They try to plan the perfect picnic… and everything goes hilariously wrong.
  • They make a new friend – but the friend needs help fast!

To enter the competition, entrants must simply print off a template from our website, fill it out and submit it to their local library or fill out the form online. The deadline for submissions is 30 June 2026.

If you’re interested in volunteering for the Reading Quest then there’s still time to apply! The deadline for volunteer applications is 17 June. Visit our website for more details.
