Esther Freud is a British novelist. Her work includes Hideous Kinky<\/em><\/a> (1992) which was made into a film and Suffolk readers will be familiar with her books set in the county, The Sea House<\/em><\/a> (2003) and Mr Mac and Me<\/em><\/a> (2014).<\/p>\n

Esther’s latest novel I Couldn’t Love You More<\/em><\/a> was published on 27 May by Bloomsbury and is available to borrow from the Suffolk Community Libraries catalogue<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Who were your literary heroes as you were growing up and when did you first realise that you wanted to write?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I was in my early twenties when I read two books, Voyage in the Dark<\/em><\/a> by Jean Rhys and a little later, Lisa St Aubin de Teran\u2019s Slow Train to Milan<\/em>, and the idea that I might, one day, write a book, began to flicker in my mind. These books were not only beautifully written, the storylines wove memory and reflection with a forward moving plot to inspired me to look to my own life for a story.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

One of your books that Suffolk readers will be familiar with is Mr Mac and Me<\/strong><\/em><\/a> which of course has a Suffolk connection. What was it like to write and research?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Mr Mac and Me<\/em> was the second book I\u2019d set in Suffolk and it was a pleasure to be back. I found a memoir on a market stall – Can Your Mother Skin a Rabbit?<\/em><\/a> – which gave me insights into rural life in a small village at the turn of the 20th century and several books set in Walberswick where the novel is set, and where Charles Rennie Mackintosh spent the first year of World War One. I also spent a lot of time researching Mackintosh\u2019s life in Glasgow and that of his artist wife Margaret Macdonald. The more I knew about them both the more determined I was to write their story.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Your new book I Couldn’t Love You More<\/strong><\/em><\/a> has recently been published. Can you tell us a bit about it?<\/strong><\/p>\n

It is a multi generational story, told from the point of view of three women from the same family, and deals with love, mothering, secrets and lies. There is an adoption at the heart of it, and the search for belonging.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Is there anything you can share with us about your latest project?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Since finishing I Couldn\u2019t Love You More<\/em> I\u2019ve been writing short stories, one of which is going to be published in The New Yorker later this year.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Is there a book you have read that has changed your life?<\/strong><\/p>\n

So many books have changed my life, but I do credit that Jean Rhys novel, the first of hers I read, with sparking the desire to write a novel of my own.<\/p>\n

What is on your ‘to read’ list at the moment?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I\u2019m reading Claire Fuller\u2019s Unsettled Ground<\/em><\/a>, and about to start Tahmima Anam\u2019s The Startup Wife<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

What is the best advice you were ever given?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sit down every day and write. Don\u2019t wait for the illusive inspiration.<\/p>\n

Can you tell us one thing about yourself that your readers may not know?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I played an alien in Dr Who when I was 21. I still get asked to sign autographs.
