Clay Connections: Ceramic Workshops

About this event

Join artist Lucy Wheeler for a series of free ceramic workshops for adults at Kessingland Library, inspired by the local landscape, history and wildlife!

Beginners welcome, no prior knowledge of ceramics needed. Suitable for ages 18+. All workshops take place from 14:00 to 16:00.

Būtina rezervacija. These workshops are free to attend but spaces are limited to 10 people, first come first served. Please email Lucy Wheeler directly on lw.branchingout@gmail.com with the sessions you would like to attend.

Please bring an apron and tea-towel with you. Wear clothes you don’t mind getting a bit messy. At the close of the project, your work will be fired and glazed and returned to you.

Session 1: Vessels and Fragments (Tuesday 13 October)

Join us as we explore pottery and ceramic pieces found in East Suffolk and discover the stories they can tell about the past. You'll then create your own clay vessel using wild clay, learning simple hand-building techniques such as pinching and coiling. There'll be plenty of time to experiment, get creative and make something unique.

Session 2: Shaping the Coast (Tuesday 24 November)

Explore how Kessingland's coastline has been shaped by nature and people. We'll make our own brushes using natural sea grasses, then use coloured liquid clay to create textured clay artworks inspired by the coast. Together, we'll reflect on the changing landscape and the ways people and nature work to protect it.

Session 3: Life on the Cliffs (Tuesday 15 December)

Discover the rich wildlife and unique habitats of East Suffolk’s cliffs. We'll explore how the cliffs have been shaped over thousands of years and the variety of plants and animals that call them home today. Inspired by this special landscape, you'll create a small hand-built clay sculpture celebrating one of the species that lives along the coast—or one that lived here in the past.

What to Expect:

We'll begin each session with a relaxed look at a collection of objects and materials gathered by Lucy, including pottery, books, poems and images connected to the themes of the workshop. With a cup of tea or coffee, this will be a chance to explore ideas, share thoughts and get inspired. We'll then try some simple creative activities to help you get started, followed by a demonstration of the clay techniques we'll be using.

There will be plenty of time to experiment, make and explore at your own pace. At the end of the session, there will be an optional opportunity to share your work and ideas with the group.
