Felixstowe Library will be marking 60 years of serving the local community next month and everyone is invited to come and join the celebrations.
The Friends of Felixstowe Library will host a free community event on Saturday 19 September at Felixstowe Library, Crescent Road, celebrating six decades of one of Suffolk’s busiest libraries.
The event will bring together library volunteers, customers and local councillors to commemorate the library’s rich and varies past serving the town and local community.
Visitors on the day can enjoy complimentary tea, coffee and biscuits between 10am and 11am, while a ‘Book Mountain’ Sale will run until 3pm, offering a wide selection of books for all ages.
At 10.30am, the Mayor of Felixstowe, Councillor Darren Aitchison, will unveil a special plaque marking the anniversary.
Felixstowe Library, in its current Crescent Road building, opened in April 1966 and was officially opened by Helena Davey, Chair of Felixstowe Urban District Council.
Before moving to its present and permanent home, Felixstowe’s original public library opened in 1928 and, following several relocations, was based in rented premises in Orwell Road from 1947.
When the Crescent Road library opened in 1966, costing £35,000 to build, its modern design was considered innovative for the time. Featuring an airy interior and mezzanine floor, it represented an exciting new development for a rapidly growing seaside town.

We are delighted to continue to support Felixstowe Library as we celebrate the 60th anniversary. Thank you to everyone who has helped us to provide a range of library improvements over recent years. These have helped to make the library such a wonderful place for everyone in the community.
Today, the library serves more than just people. The building also provides a home for local wildlife through specially installed swift nesting boxes, supporting efforts to encourage and protect the declining bird species.
