“Throughout my residency I became aware of the unique nature of the spaces offered by Suffolk Community Libraries to local communities. As a place of learning, they were an invaluable space to discuss the environmental impact of fashion and textiles. Most importantly the libraries serve as safe spaces which offer a supportive and welcoming environment for everyone in the community.”

Clare Sams is a textiles arts practitioner, lecturer, and arts educator. Clare has a master’s degree in Academic Practice for Art Design and Communication and holds a Guinness World Record for the largest crochet hook. As a textile artist Clare Sams focuses on the issues caused by global fashion and textiles corporations as one of the most polluting industries worldwide.

In the UK shoppers buy more clothing per capita than any other country in Europe. Millions of tonnes of clothing are manufactured, bought, and then thrown away every year for the sake of fashion.

A staggering 300,000 tonnes of unwanted fashion and textiles ends up in UK household waste, going straight to landfill without being reused or recycled. During her residency Clare Sams hosted workshops which drew attention to this significant issue, by sharing her skills on how to repurpose and repair clothing to give it another life.
